On 20 January 1982, during a concert at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa, a fan threw a bat onto the stage. Ozzy Osbourne, accustomed to rubber creatures being tossed during the show, picked it up and bit down before realising it was an actual animal.

Accounts differ on whether the bat was alive when it reached him, but the medical consequences were real. After the performance, Osbourne was taken for treatment and began a course of rabies injections—turning a few seconds of theatre into repeated visits to hospital.
