On 21 July 1989, Milli Vanilli performed at Lake Compounce in Bristol, Connecticut, during a Club MTV Tour stop. During “Girl You Know It’s True,” the backing track jammed and repeated the same fragment—“Girl, you know it’s”—while Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan were still on stage.

The malfunction did not immediately end their success. In February 1990 they won the Grammy for Best New Artist. The decisive collapse came in November, when producer Frank Farian publicly confirmed that Pilatus and Morvan had not sung on the records; four days later, the Recording Academy withdrew the Grammy.

The episode follows the full sequence rather than treating the skipping chorus as an instant confession: a technical failure, months of continued fame, the producer’s admission and an industry rushing to disown a deception it had helped manufacture.
