Bangkok Hotel Siege

In 1989, Billy Idol arrived in Bangkok for what he described as a planned sex holiday. It became roughly three weeks of continuous partying across a succession of hotel rooms, with damage and disorder escalating until friends, management and hotel staff could no longer persuade him to leave under his own power.

The ending was not a conventional checkout. Idol’s own autobiography recalls being tranquilised, strapped to a military stretcher and escorted out of Thailand by members of the Thai Army. Later retellings added a tranquilliser dart, but that detail is not supported by his account.

The episode follows the siege in stages: one room becomes several, the bill and damage grow, persuasion fails and an international rock star finally departs on a gurney. The absurdity lies not in one wild night, but in how long the emergency was allowed to become normal.
