From the United Nations to high-profile environmental events, he urged governments, companies and the public to confront climate change while lending celebrity reach to a cause that wanted the world’s attention.

At the same time, reports of frequent private-jet journeys, luxury-yacht travel and rapid intercontinental trips repeatedly contradicted the restraint he preached.
