In November 2000, a High Court dispute with former manager John Reid and PricewaterhouseCoopers opened Elton John’s accounts to public examination. The court heard that between January 1996 and September 1997 he spent just under £30 million—including £293,000 on flowers.

Asked whether the floral figure could be correct, Elton gave the answer that made the expenditure immortal: he liked flowers. The exchange arrived during a wider argument over tour costs, management agreements and almost £40 million in total spending after a major record deal.

The episode turns those twenty months into a floral maelstrom. Deliveries multiply, rooms disappear beneath arrangements and one perfectly ordinary pleasure expands to celebrity scale—while the court attempts to reduce it all back to columns in an account.
